Dr Maxwell Wintrobe, who developed one of the early methods of estimating ESR and has a tube named after him was a Professor of internal medicine. The haematologist is a clinician and a pathologist. Clinicians (internists and pediatricians) are reluctant to look down the eyepiece of a microscope and understand pathology. Pathologists find clinical medicine challenging. The haematologists needs to think like a clinical and a pathologist and this is what makes haematology different from other speciality.
